What You Need to Know Before You Hire a Pool Service Company

  • Do they have a Business license and location
  • Do they pay sales tax on items that they sell
  • Do they file taxes & claim the income that they receive from you or are they just a “Fly by Night” guy with a truck
  • Do they have employees or use subcontractors
  • Will they be around for any warranty issues
  • Will you be able to find them next year
  • Are they “learning” on the job or have they worked their way up with a companies program More years in the field will equal greater knowledge
  • Is there some one you can call besides the person in your back yard
  • Do they have people who specialize within the company
  • Do you have access to your account information
  • Are they accessible when you need them
  • How will they respond to possible issues
  • Are Employees trained & supervised
  • Under Arizona Law any Jobs or Contracts over $1000.00 require a licensed contractor not a handyman
  • If unlicensed , this must be disclosed by law on any literature or signs of the individual or company
  • Are they certified under Pool industry standards and SRP/APS calibration standards, variable speed pumps are now required for residential filter system replacements
  • Always ask for a certificate of insurance (this is not their vehicle insurance card!)
  • They should carry personal & property liability insurance or you are at risk if an accident or any damage occurs on your property
  • Employees must have workers compensation insurance, it’s the law
  • All legit businesses strive to be competitive in todays market, get at least 2 proposals for every contract, weekly pool maintenance should only be on a month to “yearly contract”
  • Check with your local Better Business Bureau
  • Check with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors before signing or approving any major repairs.
  • Ask for references, do an online search, talk to your neighbors.
  • Do they know Maricopa County Health Department Regulations for pools & spas
  • Most importantly, a little extra time in the decision making process will always increase the benefits and enjoyment of your pool or spa for years to come
